Support flows for charity challenge

4 January 2012

MORE than 640 participants walked and ran in the Upstream 50km Challenge earlier this month braving, at times, torrential rain as they raised funds for Camp Quality, Entrust Foundation and Disability Sports and Recreation.

The journey began at Waterfront City, Docklands and followed the Yarra River upstream, along 50 km of trails before finishing at Donvale Christian College.

Upstream Foundation coordinator Sharon Hoen said funds raised by the event had reached a significant milestone. "Participants have already raised over $144,000, which has taken the total funds raised over the seven years the event has been running to over $1 million," Hoen said.

"We are extremely proud of this achievement and equally happy to have been able to ensure 100 per cent of the funds raised went directly to the supported projects.

"It's a great day out for people of all fitness levels to meet new people, complete an individual challenge, enjoy a team building exercise or just enjoy a walk with family and friends." Daniel Langelaan ran the course in 3 hours 47 minutes while others finished in the dark after more than 12 hours on the trail. There was even a marriage proposal on the trail.

Although the event is both physically and mentally demanding, participants are challenged before the event to raise funds for the beneficiaries the Upstream Foundation supports. Participants do not pay an entry fee, but are required to raise a minimum of $200. Participants can elect to have their donations given to one or all of the three beneficiaries: Camp Quality, Disability Sports and Recreation or Entrust Foundation.
