CQ family camps

Family camps make up a large part of our recreational program and are sponsored by the Arnott's Foundation nationally. We see first hand that they make the world of difference to our families around Australia.

What's their purpose?

The enviroment created at a family camp helps bring fun and optimism back into the lives of children and their families living with cancer.

Fun activities, interesting places and meeting other families in a similar situation and helps everyone take time out from cancer. Many new friendships last well after the weekend. Importantly, everyone seems to leave with a more optimistic outlook.

Who can attend?

Families of children living with cancer from all over Australia from birth to 18 years are welcome to join the camping program. The first step is to register to become a Camp Quality Family.

How long do family camps go for?

Camps vary in duration so that a wider range of the family's needs are catered for but generally family camps are run over a two or three day weekend.

What happens at camp?

Camps vary in format but generally there are set meal times where everyone comes together and a whole host of optional activities for those who want an adventure. For those who just need timeout, we select locations to meet this need.

The whole family can join in outdoor activities together but there is all the time in the world for relaxing and for parents to spend time chatting while the kids are totally engrossed in a supervised activity. There's also plenty of time to relax over the Sunday paper.

What are the sleeping arrangements?

Locations vary but it's normally family accommodation in cabins or motels. Once you register for a specific camp you will be provided with more details.

How much does it cost?

Thanks to our generous sponsors and loyal donors, the energy of our fundraisers and volunteers, camps are able to be fully funded by Camp Quality.

How do sign up to attend?

You need to be registered as a Camp Quality family to attend camp. If you are a family with a child 18 years or under living with cancer then we would love you to join.

Keely's story

Hi my name is Sharon and my daughter Keely was diagnosed with Cancer in June 06. She underwent 6 months of chemotherapy and 5 weeks of radiation twice a day. She had a form of cancer known as Rhabdomyosarcoma, a muscle tumor behind her right eye. At the end of the treatment one of the first things we did as a family was to go to a Camp Quality Family Camp at Marcoola in February 07.

My daughter's eyes lit up when she arrived to find three other families and their children whom she had met, and sometimes shared a room on Banksia with, at the camp. She didn't feel so bad then about having no hair, or being thin and frail as the other kids were just the same. She laughed played and had so much fun! Something that had been a hard thing over the previous 6 months!

I would urge anyone involved on this life changing journey to try Camp Quality, it too is life changing. Thank you Camp Quality!!

Keely
