Magic in the air at Disney Mini Camp
An array of colourful characters filled the YMCA Jamison Early Learning Centre on Saturday the 3rd June for our ACT Mini Camp. Our youngest kids (aged 4-6 yrs.) enjoyed an enchanted day of laugher and fun decked out in Disney fancy dress.
Our campers were greeted at the door by real princesses, who presented each of the kids with their very own Camp Quality gift pack and introduced them to the group of volunteers eagerly awaiting their arrival. All the kids were matched up one-to-one with their very own volunteer for the day. The volunteers all dressed the part and two volunteers dressed as Buzz Lightyear and Minnie Mouse were by chance perfectly matched with two siblings also dressed as Buzz and Minnie! It a coincidence that had everyone, including mum, giggling.
A real-life fairy was there to paint the faces of kids and volunteers. The kids took part in various activities throughout the day - cooking chocolate coconut balls, getting crafty with the Bunnings team building money boxes, and running and climbing in the gym. They also spent time outside in the sunshine, making mud pies, climbing trees and throwing autumn leaves in an atmosphere of laughter and bright smiles. To make sure everyone stayed fuelled and energized there was a scrumptious morning tea and lunch, provided by the YMCA team.
For the final hoorah kids came inside to have a whack at the star shaped piñata. When the piñata was ripped open the kids flew to the ground to collect as much candy as their hands could carry. At the end, some kids were tuckered out from a big day, others hyped up on sugar from the piñata – regardless, everyone had a great time together.
Some of our volunteers shared their highlights of the day with us:
“Seeing kids who were nervous at the start of the day laughing and having a great time” – Camp Quality Volunteer
“Seeing how much my camper has developed and watching him have fun” – Camp Quality Volunteer
A special thank you goes to all of those involved in the day especially to the Enchanted Princesses of Canberra, Nessa the Fairy, Bunnings Belconnen, YMCA Jamison Early Learning Centre and the Raiders Club, Weston, for their generosity and hard work to make ACT Mini Camp an amazing day for everyone.
