Camp Quality Support during COVID-19

At Camp Quality, the safety of our kids, families, volunteers and staff is our top priority. We know that cancer treatment can weaken the body’s immune system, which in turn increases the risk of any infection, including coronavirus. As much as we want our kids and families to have a break from cancer on one of our programs, it is more important that they stay safe.

How does Camp Quality support families during a pandemic?

Camp Quality has always offered a range of services and programs to provide support through all the stages of the cancer experience. Despite many of our face-to-face services and programs being postponed, Camp Quality is still there for our kids and families with the following services and programs, in hospital, at home and away from it all.

Away from it all
Camp Quality Retreats continue to give respite for those families facing heartbreaking stages of cancer such as palliative care, bereavement or those doing it tough with cancer during COVID-19. While retreats in Victoria have been postponed, Camp Quality is currently working to expand the number of families attending Retreats in the other states and territories.
Camp Quality shares tickets to events, games, shows or experiences with our families free of charge to give them the opportunity to be together and create fun filled memories. Camp Quality is currently sourcing tickets to COVID-safe events so that families can continue receiving these valuable opportunities.

At home
Camp Quality’s Kids Guide to Cancer app and New Normal Navigator app will keep providing cancer resources for kids and supporting families returning home from hospital during this difficult time.

In hospital
Our Child Life Therapists continue to be there for our kids with strategies to reduce anxiety around treatment in Melbourne and Newcastle where at John Hunter Hospital the funding has recently been increased to a full time position. We are currently looking to expand our Child Life Therapy support even further.

How has Camp Quality adapted to COVID-19 so far?

Many kids and families facing cancer will remain isolated even after COVID-19 due to intensive treatment, ongoing health issues, or living in regional and remote areas. New online programs will become a permanent offering allowing Camp Quality to reach more kids and families and make sure no one misses out.

Camp Quality has rapidly developed and already implemented some exciting online projects.

  • Camp Quality’s Happiness Hub is the new online home of our services and programs. The Hub offers kids isolated by cancer treatment, hospitalisation, or living rurally, access to Puppet Power videos, kids’ activities and virtual book readings. The Hub also includes wellbeing resources for parents from Camp Quality’s social enterprise, the ORANGES Toolkit.
  • In hospital, Puppet Digital Playdates allow kids to connect live with one of our much-loved puppets via a 10 minute online ‘playdate’ bringing fun and distraction to Camp Quality kids isolated by cancer.
  • The Camp Quality Puppets also bring positivity and laughter to Facebook each Thursday, showcasing a puppet video from the Happiness Hub or screening interviews with ambassadors and the Camp Quality Family.

Where does Camp Quality go from here?

Camp Quality has several exciting projects in the works as we continue to innovate and expand our online services and programs. We are pleased to announce that Virtual Camps are in development and will bring the fun, positivity and connection of a camp experience online for Camp Quality kids aged 7 -14. A Camp Leader and the Camp Quality Puppets will take kids on an interactive live-streamed adventure. Kids receive a ‘Camp in a Box’ ahead of camp with all the equipment needed. The two first Virtual Camps in QLD and SNSW will be run in November 2020.
