Beads of Courage for Charli’s childhood cancer milestones

Camp Quality has just announced a renewal of its funding for the Beads of Courage Program at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick. The ‘Beads of Courage’ are collected at each milestone during a child’s cancer treatment and over time form beautiful strings of symbolic beads, many metres long.

One Camp Quality kid who has collected an impressive set of beads is Charli. She is was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in May 2020 and has since had to endure lots of needles, treatment and time in hospital. Charli’s mum Faye says the Beads of Courage program has supported Charli through her struggles.

When Charli was first given her Beads of Courage pouch and saw all the beautiful beads she could collect, her eyes lit up - which was pretty incredible given how sick she was.  Over the last 7 months she’s collected SO many beads, and really loves helping the ward staff pick them out.  Cancer kids go through so much, and are prodded and poked all the time, so being rewarded with beads that show how brave you are is something that has made the daily struggles more bearable for Charli.”

Kylie Estreich, Child Life Therapist at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick says the Beads of Courage Program is a much-loved resource within the Kids Cancer Centre at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick.

“Creating a visual diary of a child or young person’s treatment journey, the beads become a therapeutic tool for our patients and families – validating the enormity of the challenges they overcome by showing these in a quantitative way, and celebrating the child’s successes while recognising the tough times.”

Camp Quality’s funding for Beads of Courage is in memory of Phil Hargreaves, a ‘big kid,’ dedicated Camp Quality volunteer and much-loved part of the ‘CQ family’ who passed away from brain cancer in August. Phil’s courage, humour and fundraising legacy will now give courage to hundreds of ‘little kids’ facing the multiple painful, procedures of cancer treatment.
