Child Life Therapy making a difference

Josiah was just 12 months old when his parents received the devastating news that their child had Leukaemia. Years of treatment followed involving travel to Sydney and Newcastle hospitals.

Josiah’s parents know firsthand the benefits of Child Life Therapy and the difference accessing a Child Life Therapist made on their son’s ability to cope with treatment at such a young age. Watch our interview with Sherri, as she talks about the positive impact Veronica, a Child Life Therapist at John Hunter Children’s Hospital had on Josiah’s ability to cope with procedures.

Camp Quality understands that there are many challenges and fears children face whilst undergoing treatment. It’s because we know that Child Life Therapists make such a difference, that we will continue to advocate and fundraise to expand our services and help more children impacted by cancer across Australia.

In Newcastle, over the last 3 ½ years Camp Quality’s Child Life Therapy services have been made possible by the Greater Charitable Foundation’s support.

About Child Life Therapy

Child Life Therapists transform the terrifying experience of treatment by empowering children growing up with cancer in hospital. The life skills they teach can mean the difference between a child needing to be physically restrained or anaesthetised for a procedure, to the child being able to handle the procedure awake and fully present.

Child Life Therapists help kids cope with the hospital environment and support their continued childhood development by providing play opportunities, such as art and craft activities, cooking, games and reading. In preparation for treatment they also introduce medical play techniques and coping skills proven to reduce children’s anxiety about the procedures they face. They remain by a child’s side, providing practical support to kids and their families, throughout their treatment, forming bonds and sharing skills that strengthen the wellbeing of the entire family.

Camp Quality currently funds Child Life Therapists in NSW and VIC. In NSW, we fund Child Life Therapists at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle. We also fund Child Life Therapists in Victoria at Royal Children’s Hospital and Monash Medical Centre. Our Child Life Therapists held almost 3,000 play sessions in NSW and over 1,000 in Victoria in 2016.
