Families explore Bathurst
The first Camp Quality Canberra Family Camp of 2017 was held in sunny Bathurst over the last weekend of March. It was also the first time Camp Quality Canberra held a Camp in the Bathurst region.
The weekend saw eight families from all over ACT region attend the Camp, with some having never attended a Family Camp before. To ensure that the weekend ran smoothly, we enlisted a team of six incredible volunteers from the Central-west region.
In spite of predicted thunderstorms, everyone had a great time. Smiles were plastered to our families' faces as we visited some of Bathurst most popular tourist destinations! Each morning started with a BBQ breakfast, cooked by the fantastic Bathurst Rotary Club, at the Big4 Bathurst Panorama Holiday Park. Bob and the team made sure everyone was full of fuel to tackle each day – the Rotary Club did an amazing job! A few of our kids presented Bob, the BBQ team and the Rotary Club with a Thank-you Certificate for getting involved with the Camp.
The Saturday morning, and first full day of camp, saw families visit the Bathurst Goldfields to learn the history of the area, and gold mining in Australia. They even got to go back in time and explore the centre! The kids learnt how machines used to find gold worked and even tried their hands at making one work. The best part of the visit was panning for gold. Everyone got their hands dirty, and a few lucky kids found fake pieces of gold. Some children were disappointed that there was no real gold to find (they wanted to get rich quick).
Saturday night closed with a dinner and disco at the Bathurst RSL, where the staff decorated the room, provided a scrumptious buffet. What made the night even more special was the special appearance of the RSL Chef! She popped in for a visit ande a few of our kids presented her with a Thank-you Certificate for putting everything together. Families then danced the night away with music provided be the fabulous Vics Moblie DJ. The disco featured a smoke and bubble machine, and dance offs. It's safe to say all the kids were exhausted after the night.
The last day of Camp was spent at Jumbo’s Jungle where everyone was spoilt with amazing activities - mini golf, laser tag and a playground jungle! It was a blast to see our parents have a go at laser tag and mini golf. One of the gold mini golf courses was covered in UV lights which made for a unique experience.
Everyone had an incredible Family Camp experience. One of our new families said:
“We had a lovely weekend at Bathurst. Being our first Family Camp we weren't sure what to expect, but we all had a wonderful time. Thank you to all who helped organise and run this. The boys loved being on holiday!”
We'd like to thank Tour de Cure for sponsoring our fabulous Family Camp. Without such sponsorship we wouldn’t have been able to run the Camp and have our families visit the Bathurst region. Wed also like thank the Big4 Bathurst, Bathurst Rotary Club, Bathurst Goldfields, Bathurst RSL and Jumbo’s Jungle for all their support over the weekend, and for helping make the weekend possible.
About Family Camps
The camps cater for the whole family at no cost. Everyone gets to join in the fun. Kids-only activities are also scheduled, so parents have a chance to unwind too.
The relaxing and supportive environment is also an opportunity to meet and talk with other parents and children going through similar experiences and build strength through solidarity.
