Non-stop winter family fun in the ACT

90 families and volunteers came along to a Family Fun Day in Corin Forest to take on the snowy slopes and reconnect as a family.

Mums, dads, brothers and sisters all came along in their best winter gear and cosy beanies. For some it was the first time ever seeing snow. Everyone was given their own sled and wasted no time diving straight into it.

Children and parents built snow men and made snow angels. Age wasn’t a determining factor on the day, with volunteers, children and parents all competing to see who could race to the bottom of the slopes the fastest. Those who were perched nervously at the top of the hill slowly built up the courage to face their fears.

Thanks to the amazing organisational skills of the staff at Corin Forest Mountain Resort and the work of the volunteers, the day was a huge success. The families enjoyed an action-packed day and took home a stack of fond memories.

“Tobogganing was too much fun and the little extras like hot chocolates were just phenomenal.”

In Canberra, Family Camp gave families a whole weekend to take some time out to have fun and make new connections with families in a similar situation. The families and volunteers met at the Ibis Styles Eaglehawk - a secret piece of the city hidden among the trees.

Over the weekend families could choose from a variety of activities which enabled them to make memories not centred around sickness. The Canberra Reptile Zoo came to visit and brought with them some slithery and scaly friends. The kids got to meet snakes, lizards and turtles. Some were first to put their hand up to have a snake around their neck and others watched from a safe distance. The families also enjoyed a performance from Nomad the magician and also took a trip to the Corin Forest to experience the snow. The families spent the weekend dancing, eating and laughing non-stop.

“Even though ice skating was a bit out of my comfort zone it was great as a family to experience it and all have a go together.”

"A really big positive for me was that we met another family whose son had a similar diagnosis around the same time. We have already started texting and I think we will be really great support for each other.”

About Family Camp

Family Camps are an opportunity for families to reconnect with each other and make new connections with families in a similar situation. This builds their toolkit of resources for the ongoing experiences they face and can create lifelong friendships.

It is an opportunity to relax and make memories not centred on sickness - often for the first time since a diagnosis. Over 450 families impacted by cancer went to over 50 Family Camps in 2016.

About Family Family Fun Days

Fun Days are Camp Quality planned events where families get together and enjoy something they may not have otherwise had the opportunity to do, or the time to organise themselves.

Over 1,200 families enjoyed Fun Days in 2016.
