UPDATED: Camp Quality position statement re Channel 7 Sunday Night program (Q & A below)

Camp Quality is aware of the story that aired on Sunday 18 June on Channel 7 in regards to Appco Group Australia.

Camp Quality has a very talented team of staff and volunteers who are responsible for coordinating and managing all of our fundraising strategies and initiatives. As with a number of not for profits, our team is focused on ways we can drive sustainable income to ensure we can continue to provide our services and programs completely free of charge to kids impacted by cancer and their families.

On occasion, we have enlisted the support of outside agencies to assist us engage donors in a cost effective way. We have previously worked with Appco but ceased working with them due to the issues that arose. We have no intention of working with them again.

Like many of our families, supporters and volunteers, we found last night’s program on Channel 7 disturbing. The decision to work with a third party contractor for fundraising purposes was a relatively new endeavour for us which aimed to develop a long term sustainable revenue stream to support the growing number of families needing our programs and services within Australia. We ceased working with Appco over a month ago and another third party has not been brought in.

Camp Quality is sorry for any distress the story caused. The story focussed on the face to face fundraising agency model used by many charities. Please note this is only one of the fundraising tactics we use. 100% of all donations from individuals, which come through our website, through community fundraising and via our corporate supporters, come directly to Camp Quality.

Our key values at Camp Quality include accountability, good corporate governance and responsiveness. As such we are working hard to answer, and respond to, any and all queries. Our website and Q & A are the best source of information on the matter or you can contact us on 02 9876 0500 or at This email address is being protected from spambots. Q & A in response to Channel 7’s Sunday Night Program on Appco

In response to the concerns raised by our families, volunteers and supporters following last night’s Sunday Night program, we would like to share the following update and Q & A containing additional information.

How long was Camp Quality working with Appco?

Camp Quality has been working with Appco for just under 3 years.

Are Camp Quality with another fundraising agency now? If so what percentage comes back to the charity?

No. Since ceasing our working relationship with Appco Camp Quality has not enlisted the services of any other third party fundraising agency to assist in the engagement of regular donors to support our programs and services.

100% of all donations from individuals, which come through our website, through community fundraising and via our corporate supporters, come directly to Camp Quality.

When did Camp Quality cease working with Appco?

We ceased working with Appco over a month ago following concerns around Appco’s work practices. This decision was made independently of any contact with Channel 7.

Were the percentages of donations coming back to the charity as reported by Channel 7 correct?

No. Channel 7’s reporting of the amount of total donations received by Camp Quality was misleading. 100% of donations did come directly to Camp Quality and continue to do so. A separate fee was then paid to Appco from our general funds for the successful engagement of long term regular donors.

Donor acquisition, via face-to-face fundraising, is just one method of fundraising. While it does not currently constitute a major portion of our fundraising revenue, it has proven to be very effective, with every $1 invested returning on average $2.45 over the lifetime of the giver (ie 3 to 5 years).

Why did Camp Quality sign such a deal with Appco?

Camp Quality undertook a process of due diligence prior to entering our agreement with Appco. This included consulting with several other charities that had been working with Appco for some time. None of the issues identified during last night’s report were raised with us.

Appco Australia is one of many third-party suppliers that have provided goods and services to the charity sector. Channel 7’s reporting of the amount of total donations received by Camp Quality was misleading. 100% of donations did come directly to Camp Quality and continue to do so. A separate fee was then paid to Appco from our fundraising budget for the successful engagement of long term regular donors. Appco Australia was only paid when a donor committed to the program on an ongoing basis.

Our aim has always been, and continues to be, the creation of a sustainable income stream to enable us to consistently deliver our programs and services completely free of charge to children and families across Australia. For every $1 Camp Quality paid to Appco we received on average $2.45 over the lifetime of the giver. Appco in fact expected we would receive $3 to $4 in donations over the average life time of a donor (3–5 years).

What does Camp Quality plan to do now?
