Surf's up at Family Camp
Starting on a Friday, our Phillip Island Family Camp saw 13 families get stuck into a weekend of sun, surf, and penguins! For 12 families, this was their first camp ever, so we wanted to make it one of the best! A relaxed dinner on the Friday night saw families meet each other and settle in to Phillip Island Adventure Resort where they were staying, getting a good night of rest before an early start on Saturday.
With everyone up bright and early on Saturday morning, we were ready for one of the highlights of camp – surfing lessons at Smith Beach! For many of the kids, standing up on a surfboard was an emotional and truly empowering moment. It demonstrated just how much they can achieve even if the situation seems challenging a daunting at first. We want to extend a huge thank you to the team at Island Surfboard School who donated the lessons, with all the coaches donating their time for our Camp Quality kids.
Saturday afternoon continued the adrenaline rush with turns on flying foxes and the big swing, before what everyone had been looking forward to – the penguin show! Phillip Island is famous for its penguins, and it was an awesome experience to see them emerging from the water and heading to their nests on the sand. It was definitely a unique experience and one that our families will remember for a long time! This was especially special for Adrian, who celebrated his 7th birthday on Saturday – a very happy birthday to you from all of us at Camp Quality!
Sunday saw a more relaxed, but no less fun, day with a generously donated day of Mini Golf at Amaze ‘n’ Things. This did bring its own set of challenges for some, with a few above par holes, but overall it was a great day of bonding for all the families, both with each other and as a group.
A huge thank you to those who generously donated their time and experiences to us. This helped us to make this Family Camp an unforgettable experience for those who came along! From rising to the challenge of surfing, to seeing penguins for the first time, to laughing along at mini golf, this Family Camp helped support Camp Quality’s purpose of helping give Australian children impacted by cancer every opportunity to thrive.
We look forward to seeing everyone again on one of our other programs soon!
About Family Camps
The camps cater for the whole family at no cost. Everyone gets to join in the fun. Kids-only activities are also scheduled, so parents have a chance to unwind too.
The relaxing and supportive environment is also an opportunity to meet and talk with other parents and children going through similar experiences and build strength through solidarity.
