HOW CAN I HELP?
How can I help my family friend?
A family friend could be someone your family knows really well and hangs out with, or even a school friend’s mum and dad. Your family might have lots of different feelings when a family friend is living with cancer. That’s okay and really normal. you can talk with someone you trust, or if you need someone to talk to, you can ring Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800.
HOW CAN I HELP MY FAMILY FRIEND?
Host an Event
Your family or school might want to have a special event to raise money or support your friend – like a mufti day. If you think you’d like to help with this, ask your teacher, or someone in your family if this is a good idea.
Visit
Ask someone in your family if you can visit your family friend. This may not always be possible but if you can, think of something fun to take to do together or show them – maybe a picture you made for them, or some DVDs for them to borrow!
Keep In Touch
When your family friend is in hospital or unwell, your family can make times to call, text or video message (work together on this!) Tell a joke, a story, sing a song or just send a happy message to say you’re thinking of them!
Make a Gift
Send a parcel with fun letters, stickers, pictures, magazines or other cool stuff to your family friend when they’re in hospital, or resting at home. Getting a care package will make them feel really special. Ask someone in your family to help.
Invite Them Over
If your family friend has kids, maybe invite them over to your house to hang out and play. They will feel good knowing you’re thinking of them!
