Syringe and Blood tube
Blood tests help doctors check for certain diseases and conditions like cancer. They also help check that your body and organs are working properly. They also show how well treatments are working. In order to complete a blood test a syringe is used to move the blood from your body to a blood tube.
The blood is sent to a lab where it’s tested using machines and microscopes. A report is then sent to the doctor.
To have an x-ray, the person needs to lie on a bed or stand up next to the machine. A radiographer then takes the pictures, which appear on a computer or film.
X-ray and ultrasound machines take pictures of the inside of the body. These can be used to find cancer cells or tumours.
X-rays and ultrasounds are used for lots of reasons, not just cancer. You might need an X-ray if you break your arm or leg. And new mums have ultrasounds to see their baby before it’s born!
A sonographer helps create ultrasound pictures. They put gel on the skin above where photos need to be taken and roll a paddle over the top. This takes the photos and sends them to a computer so the doctor can see them on the screen.
CT and MRI scans use large machines to take very clear pictures of the inside of the body.
Radiographers and doctors use the pictures to see what cancer cells are doing.
People with cancer might need lots of medicines. Lines and ports let them take some medicines without having to swallow tablets or lots of liquids. They are like cannulas but last longer.
An MRI machine looks like a bed with a large tunnel around it. The person lies on the bed while it moves very slowly in and out of the tunnel. A radiographer operates the machine from another room.
Blood bags are used for reliable collection, separation, storage and transport of blood. Blood bags are designed to stop blood becoming too thick and ensure the blood and marrow are properly mixed during transfusion.
A catheter is a flexible tube that can put fluids into your body or take them out.
The radiation therapists will control the machine from the room next door. They will be able to see and talk to to the patient through a speaker and they can pause the treatment if necessary.
A hospital bed is specifically designed for patients in hospital or other health care facilities. These beds have special features both for the comfort and well-being of the patient as well as ease of access for the doctors and nurses looking after them. Common features include adjustable height for the entire bed, the head and the feet, adjustable side rails and electronic buttons to operate both the bed and connect other nearby electronic devices.
To keep the operating room germ-free, the people who work there wear special clothes as well as caps over their hair and masks over their mouth and nose to avoid spreading germs. They even wear disposable booties over their shoes! They might all look alike, but everyone in the Operating Room has a different and important job to do as part of the expert treatment team.
An IV Drip is also sometimes known as a cannula, a drip or just IV. It is a short, small plastic tube that is put into the patients vein using a needle. The Plastic tube is then left in the vein so that fluids and medicines can be given directly into the body through the bloodstream. It can also sometimes be used to take blood samples.
Radiation therapy is generated by a large machine called a Linear Accelerator which delivers high energy X-Rays or electron beams to a patient’s tumour.
There are different types of medicines that come in different forms such as liquids or tablets. Most medicines are taken by swallowing. Once the medicine is swallowed, the digestive juices in your stomach break it down and the medicine can pass into the bloodstream. Your blood then carries it to other parts of your body where medicine is needed.
A hypodermic needle is a hollow tube that is sharpened into a needle so it can be inserted into someone’s body. After it is in, medicine is pushed through the steel needle. These can also be used to take blood out of your body so it can be used to test how well you are.
Surgical instruments are the tools a doctor or surgeon needs to remove the cancer and help your body get better. A patient cannot feel the doctor doing the surgery because they will have had something called an anaesthetic, which numbs the body from pain and places the patient in a deep sleep while the surgeon operates.
All patients being treated with radiation therapy must lie on a narrow bed which is known as the treatment couch.
