Volunteering with Camp Quality is an opportunity to genuinely transform someone’s experience during one of the most challenging times in their life,” says Jo.
“I was first introduced to the organisation by a mentor and long-term volunteer, Adrian Ferris, who spoke so passionately about the impact it has on families facing cancer. I have always wanted to make a valuable contribution to the lives around me, and this was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”
“I enjoy being able to make a lasting difference on the kids and families who are part of Camp Quality. Seeing them laugh, relax and just be themselves, even just for a moment, is incredibly rewarding.”
Jo has been volunteering with Camp Quality for 13 years, and has been to over 40 camps, fun days and fundraising events. He brings enthusiasm and energy to every program he attends and has become known for his incredible balloon sculpting skills.
“I love being able to embrace my inner big kid – bringing energy, fun, silliness and humour – and watching how something as simple as laughter can lift the whole room. Knowing that those moments can help create positive memories during such a challenging time is what makes volunteering so special to me.”
Jo says it warms his heart when kids on camp tell him they want to be a volunteer like him when they grow up.
“Even more special are the moments when new volunteers approach me and say they remember me from years ago. Knowing that the special moments we share can leave such a lasting impression is incredibly meaningful. Volunteering with Camp Quality is more than simply giving your time, it’s about creating moments of laughter, normalcy and connection for families when they need it most. There’s something incredibly special about knowing you’ve helped a child forget about cancer for a while and simply be a kid again.”
“Along the way, you also build lifelong friendships with fellow volunteers who share the same values, compassion and commitment to making a difference, and that sense of community is just as rewarding.”
