00:00:00:15 – 00:00:01:20
– Hi, everyone!
00:00:01:20 – 00:00:04:08
My name’s Ariel, and
I’m from Camp Quality,
00:00:04:08 – 00:00:07:14
and I’m super excited to be introducing
00:00:07:14 – 00:00:09:03
our special guest today.
00:00:09:03 – 00:00:11:10
It’s Doctor Matt!
00:00:11:10 – 00:00:12:12
– Hi Ariel. Nice to meet ya.
00:00:12:12 – 00:00:13:17
– Aw, likewise.
00:00:13:17 – 00:00:17:03
Hey, Dr. Matt, what
kind of doctor are you?
00:00:17:03 – 00:00:19:09
– Well, I’m a pediatric oncologist.
00:00:19:09 – 00:00:20:05
– Oh.
– Mm-hmm.
00:00:20:05 – 00:00:21:07
– That’s a big word.
00:00:21:07 – 00:00:26:00
Hey, what kind of doctor
is a pediatric oncologist?
00:00:26:00 – 00:00:26:21
– Well, I’m really lucky.
00:00:26:21 – 00:00:28:22
I get to look after children
and other young people
00:00:28:22 – 00:00:30:12
who’ve been diagnosed with cancer.
00:00:30:12 – 00:00:32:04
– Oh, cancer.
00:00:32:04 – 00:00:34:18
Well, what is cancer?
00:00:34:18 – 00:00:36:06
– Well, that’s a really good question.
00:00:36:06 – 00:00:37:11
Cancer’s a serious illness
00:00:37:11 – 00:00:39:16
that can affect children very rarely.
00:00:39:16 – 00:00:40:13
And what it is,
00:00:40:13 – 00:00:42:07
is when there’s growth of cells
00:00:42:07 – 00:00:43:10
and other tissue in the body
00:00:43:10 – 00:00:44:09
that’s not meant to be there.
00:00:44:09 – 00:00:45:21
– Oh.
– And sometimes,
00:00:45:21 – 00:00:47:08
there’s lots of different types of cancer,
00:00:47:08 – 00:00:48:24
so it depends on what it is,
00:00:48:24 – 00:00:51:03
but often it can be in the blood,
00:00:51:03 – 00:00:51:24
and if it’s like that,
00:00:51:24 – 00:00:54:12
people think of it kind of
like a weed in a garden.
00:00:54:12 – 00:00:55:12
It’s not meant to be there,
00:00:55:12 – 00:00:56:08
and it’s growing,
00:00:56:08 – 00:00:58:08
and not letting the normal
flowers come through.
00:00:58:08 – 00:00:59:03
– Oh.
– So it’s our job
00:00:59:03 – 00:00:59:24
to give some treatment,
00:00:59:24 – 00:01:02:20
to get rid of those weeds and
allow the flowers to grow.
00:01:02:20 – 00:01:05:22
– Okay. Well, I mean,
can you catch cancer?
00:01:05:22 – 00:01:07:08
– No. Which is good to know.
00:01:07:08 – 00:01:08:03
– Oh.
00:01:08:03 – 00:01:10:10
– So it’s not like a cough,
cold, or a runny nose.
00:01:10:10 – 00:01:11:13
You’re not gonna catch cancer
00:01:11:13 – 00:01:13:07
by hanging around
someone who’s got cancer.
00:01:13:07 – 00:01:15:12
So if you know someone who has cancer,
00:01:15:12 – 00:01:17:02
be that a child or an adult,
00:01:17:02 – 00:01:18:24
you can still see them,
and play with them,
00:01:18:24 – 00:01:20:12
and talk to them, and hug them.
00:01:20:12 – 00:01:22:17
Sometimes if people have cancer, though,
00:01:22:17 – 00:01:23:22
they don’t wanna catch any bugs,
00:01:23:22 – 00:01:25:14
so you better make sure that you’re well.
00:01:25:14 – 00:01:26:14
– Oh, okay.
00:01:26:14 – 00:01:29:08
Well, how do you get cancer, then?
00:01:29:08 – 00:01:30:17
– That’s a really good question, too.
00:01:30:17 – 00:01:31:19
You’re full of good questions.
00:01:31:19 – 00:01:33:18
– Aw, thanks, Dr. Matt!
00:01:33:18 – 00:01:35:02
– Cancer happens,
00:01:35:02 – 00:01:37:09
often for reasons that we
don’t quite understand.
00:01:37:09 – 00:01:39:11
It’s not because of
something someone’s done,
00:01:39:11 – 00:01:40:09
or not done,
00:01:40:09 – 00:01:41:16
something they’ve been exposed to,
00:01:41:16 – 00:01:42:13
or being naughty,
00:01:42:13 – 00:01:43:20
or a bump on the head.
00:01:43:20 – 00:01:45:09
Most of the time it’s just a change
00:01:45:09 – 00:01:46:17
that happens in their body,
00:01:46:17 – 00:01:48:01
that’s no one’s fault.
00:01:48:01 – 00:01:50:05
– What does cancer look like, then?
00:01:50:05 – 00:01:52:01
– Well, it depends on where it is, really.
00:01:52:01 – 00:01:53:20
Cancer can be in lots of different spots.
00:01:53:20 – 00:01:54:22
It can be in the brain,
00:01:54:22 – 00:01:55:18
and if it’s like that
00:01:55:18 – 00:01:57:00
it looks like a lump or a bump
00:01:57:00 – 00:01:58:23
that you might see on a scan that we do.
00:01:58:23 – 00:02:00:19
Sometimes you might have
a lump in your belly
00:02:00:19 – 00:02:01:19
or in your chest,
00:02:01:19 – 00:02:03:17
or it might be some funny-looking cells
00:02:03:17 – 00:02:05:19
when we look at your
blood down the microscope.
00:02:05:19 – 00:02:08:13
– Okay. Here’s a curly question.
00:02:08:13 – 00:02:11:10
How do you know if you’ve got cancer?
00:02:11:10 – 00:02:12:06
– Well, it depends.
00:02:12:06 – 00:02:15:06
It’s really, depends on
what type of cancer it is.
00:02:15:06 – 00:02:17:01
Sometimes people get really tired,
00:02:17:01 – 00:02:18:14
or they start getting bruising.
00:02:18:14 – 00:02:20:19
Sometimes people notice a lump or a bump.
00:02:20:19 – 00:02:22:01
So if you’re worried about anything,
00:02:22:01 – 00:02:22:22
it’s really important.
00:02:22:22 – 00:02:24:24
Just have a chat to your
mom, or dad, or carer,
00:02:24:24 – 00:02:26:10
and they can take it from there.
00:02:26:10 – 00:02:27:12
– Oh, wow.
00:02:27:12 – 00:02:30:06
Dr. Matt, you seem
really good at your job.
00:02:30:06 – 00:02:32:19
Hey, what’s the best
bit about what you do?
00:02:32:19 – 00:02:34:01
– Well, other than coming to talk
00:02:34:01 – 00:02:36:02
to puppets like you, Ariel,
– Aw.
00:02:36:02 – 00:02:38:11
– I love being able to look
after the kids that I do.
00:02:38:11 – 00:02:39:14
I get to know them really well,
00:02:39:14 – 00:02:40:10
and their families,
00:02:40:10 – 00:02:42:12
and I force feed them photos of my dog,
00:02:42:12 – 00:02:43:13
which is my other favorite thing
00:02:43:13 – 00:02:44:19
to talk about.
(Ariel laughs)
00:02:44:19 – 00:02:47:02
– Aw, that’s great, Dr. Matt.
00:02:47:02 – 00:02:50:17
Hey, thank you so much for
spending time with us today.
00:02:50:17 – 00:02:52:02
It’s been an absolute pleasure.
00:02:52:02 – 00:02:53:16
– Oh, it’s a pleasure for me.
00:02:53:16 – 00:02:54:16
Thank you for the invite.
00:02:54:16 – 00:02:55:19
– Oh, absolutely.
00:02:55:19 – 00:02:58:02
Well, this is goodbye
from us at Camp Quality.
00:02:58:02 – 00:02:59:06
Bye!
– Bye.
