The Comet Show in Comet, Queensland will be held on Friday 16, Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 of May and will mark 25 years of raising vital funds for kids facing cancer. Over the past few decades, the event has raised over $200,000 for Camp Quality, helping fund programs that give children facing cancer and their families the chance to connect, and build happy memories after the trauma of a cancer diagnosis.
For event organisers Linda McGhee and Dianne O’Brien, choosing to fundraise for Camp Quality was an easy decision as they know just how far-reaching the impacts of a cancer diagnosis are for families. “I have had four of my immediate family members diagnosed with cancer over the years. Our family decided to fundraise for Camp Quality as the Central Highlands are isolated, and people must travel for treatment. We’re thrilled to know that our donations have been able to help,” Linda says.
Part of the three day-long event is dog trialling which began as a grassroots event among local graziers and farmers working sheep and cattle properties, coming together to showcase their skills in what has become an increasingly popular sport. Handlers guide their dogs through a set course using only voice or whistle commands, demonstrating incredible teamwork and trust. Alongside the dog trials, there will be a horse show, mower racing on Saturday night before the official show day on Sunday, which includes markets and a petting zoo for kids.
Funds raised from the event support local families facing cancer to have a break from treatment and create beautiful memories together away from hospital walls.
Linda credits the generosity of long-time supporters for the ongoing success of the event. “I get great enjoyment from people immediately coming on board to help with sponsorship. They are very special people and businesses in my books. One gentleman who has been donating for 26 years said, ‘I only give 250 bucks and that’s not much.’ My reply was ‘you have been doing this for 26 years; just add that up.’”
Camp Quality CEO, Deborah Thomas, says: “Linda and Dianne are two incredible Comet locals dedicated to helping kids and families facing cancer in their region. Their commitment to fundraising for Camp Quality is simply astounding. Every dollar helps kids going through the trauma of cancer treatment, have the chance to laugh, find positivity and spend time with their family outside of the hospital through our Family Camps, Kids’ Camps, and Family Getaway program.”
People can show their support by attending the event, purchasing a raffle ticket for the chance to win a pair of Ariat Top Boots, or donating directly via Camp Quality’s website. All raffle proceeds will go to Camp Quality to support children facing cancer and their families.
