Remember little Gus from our Digital Puppet Playdate video ? He and his family were recently the first guests at our new Family Retreat in Western Australia!
Gus was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in May 2021 and has been in and out of hospital ever since. The toughest part for his family was the isolation, either being stuck in hospital or at home, afraid of catching any illness due to Gus being immunocompromised.
“The Family Retreat came to us after we had a really tough stint with Gus in hospital with liver complications. We desperately needed a break, but Gus couldn’t leave Perth. Camp than I could have ever imagined,” says Gus’s mum, Lindsay.
“What I didn’t Quality provided us with a cabin at Woodman Point, right on the beach, and it’s meant more realise was how much we were missing connection with each other. We were just living our days minute-to-minute. To look back now and see that it was just five days of us just being ourselves with no appointments, no hospital.
“We always talk about memories like, ‘Oh, we went on that bike ride to the beach’ and how much fun it was. We went fishing, and for Gus remembering the fishing instead of why we were there, because of his cancer and how burnt out we were, is so incredible. He still talks about ‘when I went fishing’.”
