On Sunday, 22 February, over 200 trucks will set off from Beckley Park for the 11th annual Camp Quality Convoy Geelong, raising vital funds for families impacted by cancer, like Tom’s.
Departing at 8:30 a.m., the convoy will complete a 40km circuit down to Waurn Ponds, and back up through Geelong, arriving back at the park at 10:30 a.m. for the kick-off of a free Family Festival.
In late 2023, while the family were relocating to regional Victoria, nine-year-old Tom started feeling unwell. After many visits to the doctor and hospital for infections, achy joints and weight loss, a blood test revealed cancer markers, and a plan was made to transfer Tom to a larger hospital.
“Tom and I left in an ambulance, and we didn’t come back for nearly two months,” says Tumay, Tom’s mum. ”The first few weeks were really scary. He was so sick, just skin and bone.”
A Camp Quality Child Life Therapist supported Tom through the early days, helping him understand what was happening and all the tests and procedures he needed to have.
“They came in with their little buzzy toys and helped to talk about how we could get Tom to go under the general anesthetic. They put a central line in his chest, and he just hated it. He couldn’t walk and was in a wheelchair. Then the chemotherapy started.”
Tom was in and out of the hospital for months during the intensive phase of his treatment. Once he had transitioned into maintenance treatment, Tom’s family registered with Camp Quality. They went to their first Family Camp and loved it so much they went again the next year.
“It was just incredible. Being able to see Tom, just for a minute, forget everything. Playing and laughing and just being a child with not a care in the world. You just feel like you are stealing their childhood. But then on camp, he got to go down to the beach, put on a wetsuit and get in the ocean.”
Tom and his family attended Convoy Geelong in 2025. “He was lucky enough to be one of the judges for the kids’ choice award at Camp Quality Convoy. All he wants to do is be a Truck Driver when he grows up and one day, he wants to drive the lead truck in the convoy!”
Camp Quality Chief Commercial Officer, Sandie Hall, says that events like Convoy Geelong are more than just fundraising; they are a powerful display of community spirit.
“For over a decade, the trucking community in Victoria has united behind Camp Quality’s goal of bringing joy and laughter back into the lives of families like Tom’s, facing the devastating realities of cancer.”
“The incredible generosity of the Convoy Geelong participants has allowed Camp Quality to support even more kids impacted by cancer, through our Cancer Education Program, hospital support and recreational programs including camps and Family Fun Days.”
Camp Quality is thrilled to have Daimler Trucks on board as our Convoy Geelong Platinum Sponsor this year, helping us reach even more of the kids and families who need our support.
