Camp Quality is thrilled to support the delivery of Classic Cruise on Sunday, 14 September. This ultimate motoring event will see almost 400 cars and motorbikes leave from the National Arboretum at 10am, drive around Canberra, to arrive at Questacon at 11am, all to raise vital funds for Camp Quality.
Celebrating their 10th year, the Classic Cruise route will include 10 iconic Canberra landmarks (see map below). After the drive, there will be a ‘Show ‘n’ Shine’ at Questacon, with food and fun activities, as well as an extraordinary array of wildly themed cars, vintage vehicles and bikes on display. All the participants are encouraged to dress up as Superheroes.
Classic Cruise was created in 2016 by the Camp Quality fundraising powerhouse, the SuperHeroes ACT team, who take part in multiple Camp Quality motoring events throughout the year. Comprised of four original members, Brett and Cathy Norton, and Anna and Ivan Slavich, the team decided to merge their separate fundraising endeavours into one super event, Classic Cruise.
The event has grown significantly since then and is on track to reach $1 million raised for Camp Quality by the end of this year’s event.
“The Canberra community never ceases to amaze me with its endless generosity, and whilst we work very hard together all year round together to deliver the event, we are very blessed with loyal local sponsors and supporters who are so invested in our mission,” says Cathy Norton aka Supergirl.
Deborah Thomas, Camp Quality CEO, says Classic Cruise’s incredible fundraising achievement is a testament to the passion and dedication of the SuperHeroes ACT team, and all the supporters who take part each year to raise money for kids impacted by cancer.
“We are so grateful for the hard work that the Superheroes ACT team put into delivering Classic Cruise, year on year. As a result of the incredible generosity of their Canberra community, Camp Quality has been able to expand services in the region, including the introduction of a full-time Child Life Therapist in Canberra Hospital,” says Ms. Thomas.
The funds raised from Classic Cruise go towards supporting families like Rory’s with vital services and programs, including Family Getaways, Family Camps, and Kids’ Camps. A local Canberra and Camp Quality child, Rory, was only four years old when he was diagnosed with leukaemia.
“His world was blown apart, and everybody was poking and prodding him,“ says Rory’s mum, Jen. “Rory became really withdrawn; he just shut down. He wouldn’t speak to anyone. He was a shell of himself,”
During Rory’s treatment a Camp Quality Child Life Therapists helped Rory to understand the procedures he was having and his illness, and the Camp Quality puppets helped him laugh again. After Rory’s puppet playdate, Jen said, “It was the first time in such a long time that we’d seen him smile and laugh. He started coming back to himself; it was really special.”
