Sunday 18 May, 160 fitness enthusiasts across two of Perth’s top gyms are gearing up to sweat it out and burn a combined 160,000 calories, all in the name of raising vital funds for children facing cancer.
Body MBrace Morley, North Perth and Bedford are set to host a fun fitness challenge that will see participants push themselves to burn 1,000 calories each in just two hours, using treadmills, bikes, rowers or cross trainers, with the goal of raising $80,000 for children’s cancer charity, Camp Quality. So far over $50,000 has been raised.
This inspiring physical challenge was created by Body MBrace founders, brothers Seth and Greg Maserow, who have dedicated their community-driven fitness movement to a cause close to their hearts.
“For every child, carer and parent fighting cancer; we stand as their storm-breakers. It’s not just about raising money, but raising hope, love and the belief that brighter days are ahead. This is for them, for their courage, for their laughter, for their tomorrow,” says Seth.
Camp Quality CEO Deborah Thomas says, “We are so grateful to Seth and Greg for partnering with Camp Quality and encouraging their local community to come together to support West Australian kids and their families facing cancer.
“At Camp Quality we’re truly humbled by the generosity of the Perth community. Their enthusiasm to raise money for kids and families facing their darkest days is truly inspiring. Every dollar raised helps fund support services that build resilience and optimism including Family Camps, Kids’ Camps, Family Getaways and Emergency Respite (for palliative care and bereavement).
“Camp Quality’s services and programs give kids a break from the trauma of cancer and the opportunity to reconnect as a family following long hospital stays that fragment the family unit. We also offer kids and their families the chance to meet others going through the same challenges and become part of a supportive community.”
Funds raised will help local families like the Leahy’s, who were supported by Camp Quality after their five-year-old son, Logan, was diagnosed with a brain tumour.
What began as nausea and fatigue quickly escalated when Logan collapsed and could no longer stand up. An MRI revealed a tumour the size of a tennis ball in his brain. After an eight-hour surgery, Logan was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, followed by months in hospital undergoing treatment with radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
“During treatment, our world felt small. Planning anything beyond a day or two seemed daunting. Camp Quality helped us reconnect with the joys of childhood, free from the shadow of illness,” says Erin, Logan’s Mum.
The good news is that after months in a wheelchair, Logan is in remission and walking again. The Leahy family recently attended their first Camp Quality Family Getaway at Busselton where they were able to forget about cancer for a few days and be together as a family. The trio spent the weekend by the beach, exploring chocolate factories and most importantly, laughing and creating happy memories.
Body MBrace is open to all fitness levels. Participants can register solo or as part of a team and are encouraged to fundraise as part of their challenge.
