On Friday 22 March, over 100 motorcycle enthusiasts will set off on a three-day ride through rural New South Wales to raise money for kids and families impacted by cancer. The sold-out fundraising event has already raised a whopping $160,000.
Motorcyclists will convoy out of Newcastle toward Armidale before heading to Port Macquarie and finishing their journey back in Newcastle.
Participant Nikki Thurbon has been a Camp Quality volunteer for ten years, and to celebrate, is taking on Motocyc with her dad.
“It was dad’s idea!” Thurbon says. “He saw it advertised, is a keen motorcyclist and has gone on many, many bike adventures over the years. It feels like a great opportunity to mark my 10 years as a vollie with a cause I am passionate and grateful to support and be part of.”
Nikki experienced first-hand the impacts that cancer has on a family when her brother was diagnosed as a young adult and then her dad.
“As a family member it often feels like you can’t do anything,” Turbons says. “But having Camp Quality and being able to volunteer and help facilitate special moments for families going through all sorts of chaos is something I can do and is very special to be a part of.”
Camp Quality CEO Deborah Thomas says: “Motocyc is a fun, unique event that showcases the heart of the motorcycling community in NSW. These generous participants return year after year to raise money to give kids and their families a much-needed break from the trauma of cancer at one of our Camps or Family Retreats.”
“Every day, two Aussie families will receive the heartbreaking news that their child has cancer. As well as providing a recreational break from cancer, Camp Quality provides support at every step of the cancer journey – with in hospital support for children undergoing treatments, counselling services for parents and age-appropriate information such as our Cancer Education Program performed by the Camp Quality puppets in schools. Camp Quality helps families to reconnect post hospital stays, build a supportive community and create positive memories together.”
